Borussia Dortmund Triumphs Over Paris St-Germain to Reach Champions League Final
Borussia Dortmund delivered a sterling away performance to outplay Paris St-Germain (PSG) and secure their place in the first Champions League final since 2013. Holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg of the semi-final, Dortmund managed to double their advantage when Mats Hummels scored from a corner delivered by Julian Brandt.
This much-needed goal followed a squandered opportunity from PSG's Warren Zaire-Emery, who hit the post in the opening moments of the second half. Despite hitting the post multiple times, PSG fell 2-0 behind on aggregate and couldn't recover.
A moment of potential respite arrived for PSG when referee Daniele Orsato signaled a penalty for a foul on Ousmane Dembele, only to reverse his decision, ruling that the foul had occurred outside the penalty area.
Despite their loss in the 2020 final, PSG, who have never won the European championship, found themselves continually thwarted by Dortmund's formidable defense. Particularly noteworthy was the duel between Dortmund's defense and Kylian Mbappe, who will join Real Madrid in the summer. Despite several attempts and deflections, Mbappe couldn't pierce Dortmund's defensive line.
The final match is scheduled to take place at Wembley on Saturday, 1 June. Depending on the outcome of the second 2024 semi-final between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, it could end up being an all-German final, like in 2013. Dortmund is vying for their second European championship, their first being a 3-1 victory over Juventus in the 1997 final.
Interestingly, despite domestic struggles and a tough group stage against PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle, Dortmund has managed to upset expectations and secured a spot in the finals, largely due to their collective resilience and superb team effort.
