Marca claims that Alonso's retention has brought Sporting CP's head coach Amorim closer to taking charge at Liverpool.
Marca states that before Alonso announced his stay, although Amorim was a hot candidate for the Liverpool coaching position, it didn't necessarily mean he would be hired by the Reds. Marca reporter Ornstain previously mentioned that securing Amorim as Liverpool's coach wouldn't be easy: "His contract has a €10 million buyout clause, which may not seem much, especially compared to signing a player. But for a coach, regardless of whether we like the coach or not, this buyout clause is quite high." Marca suggests that Alonso's current decision might make the €10 million buyout clause seem less daunting, especially for a position like Liverpool's head coach, where a €10 million buyout clause doesn't seem significant.
During the post-match press conference after defeating Amadora Stars, Amorim was asked about Liverpool's interest in him, to which he responded: "I am focused on Sporting CP, and I am very proud. We are focused on winning championships. I am happy here, more important than contracts. We are about to face Benfica." This season marks Amorim's fourth season coaching Sporting CP, during which he has led the team to one league championship, two cup championships, and one super cup championship.
