Boniek: Zalewski finds it difficult to accept a substitute role

Romanian legend Boniek discussed Zalewski's recent struggles and the rumors of his potential departure from the team in an interview with Polish media outlet Meczyki.

Poland eliminated Estonia and Wales in the UEFA European Championship playoffs, with Zalewski delivering impressive performances in both matches. However, his situation at Roma isn't favorable, having only featured once in the past five league games.

Boniek commented on Zalewski's situation, saying, "After the 2024 European Championship, he needs to seriously consider his options. In my opinion, he needs to gain confidence and feel like he's one of the top 13 or 14 regular players. He finds it difficult to accept a substitute role."

Continuing, Boniek remarked, "De Rossi arrived, and they started playing with four defenders. The coach believes he's weak defensively during matches, and there's a lot of competition in that area. If I could tell Nicola one thing, I would say, I believe your best position is as a left-back or wing-back. You can improve on it because you're already excellent. Otherwise, he will have to learn again."

Finally, Boniek concluded, "There's only one question. I know Nicola loves Roma, and he loves this club. He won't rush to change clubs. But on the other hand, a footballer's career is short, and you have to make every effort to achieve the best possible success and be satisfied with it. I don't know what he'll ultimately do."

As of now, Zalewski has made 101 appearances for Roma's first team, contributing 2 goals and 7 assists.
