Former England striker Wayne Rooney is set to negotiate with the Championship club Plymouth Argyle for their available head-coach position. After a disappointing tenure with Birmingham, where he lost nine out of fifteen matches, the 38-year-old is eager to rebuild his reputation.
Plymouth is seeking a new manager following the dismissal of Ian Foster last season. The club was temporarily led by Director of Football Neil Dewsnip and coach Kevin Nancekivell, who ensured Plymouth's safety - ironically at Birmingham's expense.
Dewsnip has a previous relationship with Rooney from his coaching stint at Everton’s academy.
Rooney, who holds the record of being Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals and having scored 53 times for England, transitioned to a player-coach role with Derby in November 2020. He later became the permanent manager before moving back to the U.S. to manage his former club, DC United.
However, his subsequent appointment as Birmingham's manager in October 2023 was less successful and he was sacked within three months. The negotiations with Plymouth could provide him an opportunity to bounce back in his managerial career.
